Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)
Neuro is to do with neurology and how information from our senses is processed internally. Linguistic is to do with language and how we communicate experiences to ourselves and others. Programming is to do with the internal strategies and steps we use to achieve specific results.
NLP was developed in the 1970’s by Richard Bandler, who was a gestalt therapist and John Grinder, who was a linguistics specialist. Grinder observed Bandler with his group and noticed he was applying certain principles of linguistics. Bandler and Grinder then decided to observe groups being run by other master communicators in the area of personal transformation and found that they were also using the same linguistic patterns.
Their work continued, books were written and the knowledge of NLP became well known and used by many others. It now plays a very prominent part in most personal and business training. It is also used a great deal in the world of sport as many coaches have some training in NLP.
By becoming aware of ‘what’ and ‘how’ you think, the specialist in NLP can advise and demonstrate new and beneficial ways of dealing with situations, enabling you to use these tools in many different aspects of your life.
